A great move forward for high-speed rail

Nu-Rock technology can be applied successfully for the manufacture of superior performing high speed railway sleepers. Developed and refined in conjunction with Wollongong University NSW, Nu-Rock high speed railway sleepers represent a great step forward for the rail sector, delivering stronger more durable sleepers in addition to meaningful time and cost savings for railway owner/operators.

The absence of any pre-stressed steel in the production process makes Nu-Rock high speed railway sleepers significantly easier and faster to manufacture. Importantly, by containing up to 85% recycled material, Nu-Rock high speed railway sleepers are a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete railway sleepers. By containing up to 35% shredded rubber tires, Nu-Rock high speed railway sleepers excel at absorbing vibration and considerably reducing the spread of the ballast under the track and sleepers.

Emissions free manufacturing

Nu-Rock’s “Formulated Rock” technology uses an emissions-free manufacturing process. It represents a significant improvement on centuries-old, energy-intensive methods that require the quarrying, transport, and kiln firing of limestone at temperatures of up to 1500°C. These traditional processes also rely on the extraction and movement of finite natural resources such as sand and aggregates.

In contrast to Nu-Rock, clay-based product manufacturing is also highly energy-intensive, typically involving a seven-day warming and drying cycle at 500°C, followed by a three-day firing process at 1050°C.
